Getting out the door by 7am…

I was reading a conversation on Mumsnet on Wednesday about a mum contemplating taking a job. Reasons being that she would have to leave at 7.30am to get her child to childcare in time for her to get to work.

It made me stop and think about our morning routine at home. It has been the same routine for so long, I don’t know what I would do if it changed now.

So our weekday morning ‘routine’ consists of the following:

5.50am Alarm goes off

6.10am Up and out of bed to wash face, straighten hair, make up etc

6.30am Nip downstairs to make a cuppa and lunches for the day

6.40am Get little man up and lie on the bed with me having a cuddle and cup of milk whilst I finish my first cup of tea

6.50am Start getting little man changed, before getting ourselves ready

7.00am Downstairs to grab a snack for little man for the car, shoes all on and out the door (and allow 5 minutes for a potential tantrum)

This is pretty much how it goes Monday to Friday. It can get tedious and definitely tiring but it is worth it. Little man hasn’t known any different. He has always been woken up around 6.30am every morning regardless of a week day or weekend.

Now he is getting older, if he is asleep on a weekend I let him have a lie in. Usually I am still up at 6am at the weekend anyway. I find it easier getting up the same time every day, plus I am definitely an early bird.

I always have been.

But the whole conversation on Mumsnet did get me thinking. Was it unreasonable that the Busy Working Mummy household leave at 7am every morning to go about our busy days? We don’t return until 5.30pm at the earliest most evenings, which doesn’t leave a lot of time to spend together before little mans bedtime at 7pm.

Unfortunately this is what so many working families are finding out at the moment. Everyone leads such busy lives with no signs of slowing down. That is why it is important to enjoy the weekends and to catch up on family and friend time.

So what are your morning routines like? Are they chaotic and frantic, or have you found a routine that runs like clockwork?

  1. I am trying to shake up our routine and get up at 5AM so I have a little time for coffee and e-mail before my little guy wakes up. I keep getting up at the same time as him and then we are both sleepy and fumbling. So far this is the first day I have succeeded. I forced myself into the shower before I could contemplate soaking up another hour in bed!

  2. Ahhh that’s such a busy morning and I’m in awe of how quick you get things done (10 minutes at a time!). We don’t have a routine at the moment as I’m still on maternity so I leave my 7 month old to sleep. But, I dread to think what our routine will be like in 6 weeks when I go back to work. I was leaving the house at 6:45am and getting home after 7:15pm before Little One! I hadn’t thought about it before this post, eek! #fortheloveofBLOG

  3. Sounds really familiar hun and probably the same for most working parents. We are out the door at 7.20am and not back in until 6pm. I have to wake my daughter at 7am, but let her lie in the weekends. It’s hard but worth it. Thanks for linking up at #fortheloveofBLOG. Claire x
