There has been a lot of coverage recently about parents choosing to call their babies different and unusual names. Especially celebrities…
Interestingly my own name is going out of fashion with a 98% drop in the past 20 years!!! Oh dear.
Whereas my little mans name has been in the top 3 boy names since 2009, being ranked number 1 for more than 10 years. Does that then make me unoriginal?
Does it really matter what we call our children?
I am actually a great believer that it does matter. Take Gwyneth Paltrow’s child called Apple for instance.
Where unfortunately a bully culture is so high in schools amongst children, is being called a name like Apple going to help? You could say it doesn’t matter considering who her parents are but you get the idea..
Anything that is out of the ordinary, children pick up on which is where bullying starts. I have ginger hair, which is why I experienced bullying throughout school – I was labelled ‘different’.
Little man also has ginger hair, yet I chose a sensible name for him to avoid any additional embarrassment at a later stage in his life.
The novelty of a strange or exotic name would have to wear off eventually when the baby grows up and is a teenager, or gets married and has a child of their own.
Vouchercloud has come up with a really good Baby Name Trends & Predictions chart to give some inspiration on some popular baby names but also some different ones too.
What are your thoughts on baby names? Is normal better? Or is different becoming the new normal?
